You don't tell us what your existing standard is for your CMMS. If it is a mishmash, you are right in establishing a standard. Having the asset identification include equipment type is a good start. Document the standard that you are going to use. Depending on how frequently equipment could move would in my opinion factor into the inclusion of location. The CMMS should allow a detailed location identification. The idea of including location is good, but more importantly, as an example, if you are adding pumps, they should be numbered something like this PUMP-001-LINE2-FORM where we know it is a pump, it is one of a number of pumps and it is on line 2 and used in forming.
1) Establish the standard
2) Put QR or bar-code on the equipment. The CMMS should allow any code to be used to identify the equipment, it shouldn't have to be the asset ID.
3) Use mobile devices to complete PM;s create break/fix work orders, retrieve a BOM, and history at the piece of equipment.
4) Establish your PM's
5) Execute
Seems basic, but you would not believe the number of facilities that struggle with this.

Subject: CMMS Naming Convention
Hello All,
Due to our new paint shop, we have a large amount of new equipment that needs to be entered into our CMMS (MAPCON).
For example, a pump could be PXXXXXX or PMPXXXXXX, motor could be MXXXXXX or MTRXXXXXX along with other identifiers such as locations and process identifiers.
Is there a best practice for naming equipment?
Any recommendations or lessons learned?
Thanks for the feedback.
