Branding Maintenance

Imagine you had the opportunity to rebrand a Maintenance Organization corporately. New name, new titles and a new perspective to present organizationally. What would it be and why? I support several facilities and the equipment that is used to execute our objectives. We have the opportunity to do just this and I am curious as to what other Maintenance & Reliability Professionals think. I have thought about several different variations to include, but not limited to the following:

    Facility Services
    Facility Services & Asset Management
Facility Services, Asset Management & Reliability
    Asset Management & Reliability
    Maintenance & Reliability
    Etc.

I would love hear your thoughts!

    Dear Mr.Joshua,
In such a scenario, it would be good to have a vision document for the maintenance organisation. Whenever a organisation is being re-organised, it is vital that the team needs to be given a new sense of direction. It is something similar to starting a new venture. It then becomes vital to get the inputs from all the stakeholders. A vision and mission workshop can be organised for the team, with every key stakeholder participating. Normally, such workshops take a full day, with the participants getting split into teams to work their ideas and present them to the rest of the team. At the end of the day, a collective consensus would be garnered for finalizing the vision and mission of the organisation. Based on this new vision and mission statements, the organisation structure would need to be made. For example, if a maintenance organisation has a vision statement for aspiring to reduce the breakdowns in the facility by 10%, the structure needs to be made in a way that supports the breakdown teams more. The vision statement would guide the organisation structure and would be derived from the actual needs of the facility at that point in time. Based on the organisation structure, the job description and the level of competency of the person handling the vertical needs to be formed. If it is observed from the job description that there is some skill gap that needs to be bridged, then training of the team needs to be given and so on. All of these actions flow from the vision and mission statements of the vertical. It is a statement on what the team aspires to be and how it is actually going to make it happen. The organisation titles can then be derived from all these actions that have been done.
I was part of the Asset Optimization team, which was a newly formed vertical in our facility. This was the methodology that we had followed and it resulted in the team imbibing the change in a very positive way.

    Hi Joshua

It would be difficult to ideally suggest a name without knowing what the objectives of your department are.

From your brief note, your present designation and name of your company I would suggest like
"facility availability management" department or "facility availability assurance" department or "reliability assurance services"

    Good luck

    Hi Joshua,

Great to see you looking at creating a positive image for the group.  Aa prior posts note, the name should be based on your vision and objectives (more detail than posted).  Some concepts to help your thinking on this:
    - understand the perception within your organization for terms like "services," "management," and "assets" - in some organizations these are viewed more or less favorably vs other terms
    - shorter is always better
    - if you are dealing with both facilities and plant or not (my facility folks have been moving to term Facility Asset Management but that does not suggest support for plant equipment

Let us know where you end up.  Cheers.

first word(s) should reflect the process to be maintained or improved, like Productivity, Throughput, Return on Assets

next word(s) should reflect the role, like Coach, Evangelist, Czar

avoid words that are used often as they carry a lot of baggage so are glossed over or misunderstood

    Joshua,

There are excellent suggestions from the other respondents. As mentioned by them, it's essential to know the Context (The nature of your Organization, the Business you're in, the Vision and Mission of the Organization and your Team in particular) to consider an appropriate name.

In my understanding, District Facility Maintenance is a broad-based service that is slightly different from the typical Reliability+Maintenance Teams that support manufacturing in a Business Organization.

In my view, you could consider "Asset Management" that would be appropriate being a contemporary and holistic management system applicable to all types organizations (where ever there are Physical Assets). Asset Management encompasses Maintenance, Reliability Functions (you could avoid them in the name). In case you want to emphasize the role for Reliability (incldg. Design Improvements), you could consider "Reliability and Asset Management".

In case you're supporting a direct Manufacturing/Production/Operation Unit, you could also consider "Capacity Assurance" either in the name or in the mission.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks

    Joshua,

I agree with Sundar. Not knowing what your organization does, the name "Reliability and Asset Management" sums up simple objectives of a top notch team. It covers facility and any type of assets.  :)

    Joshua,

You have many good suggestions here.

While you develop your vision and goals to find your brand, I would add that it is important to get the perspective of upper management because they are your customer. Most management seems to view maintenance organizations as a necessary expense. If that is true in your organization, perhaps this is your chance to help change that perspective.

Even if your management is supportive of your efforts, include them in the branding process. It will always give them a sense of ownership and support. If your organization has a PR person it certainly couldn't hurt to get their perspective also.

I applaud your efforts. Good Luck.

I think that it will be more appropriate to name it: Maintenance & Physical Assets Management

I like Asset Maintenance and Reliability but from my perspective working on a Pharmaceutical environment something related to the End User (Operator) where most of the failures comes from needs to be integrated to the branding because they area a critical element in the process.
