Typically soft (NLGI # 0) grade greases would be used in automatic lubrication systems that operate in low temperatures and/or where the component type/system design mandates the use of these types of greases. They may also be seen in some (rare) gearboxes. As far as chains go, yes, I have seen them used on fairly large link designs. Chains benefit by having lubricant penetrate into the links and pins and here is where oil is superior as generally greases tend to provide a superficial coating.
Automatically dispensing the oil or grease is preferred and spraying grease would be ideal to enhance penetration.
NLGI #0 greases are available in H1 ratings.

What type of grease and or lubricants' are maintenance professionals using today? I'm trying to learn whether NLGI1,0 pumpable greases are used and what NSF rating.
