Power Gen users. What CMMS system do you use?
What do you like about it and what doesn't work well?

We use Avantis, but this is not very common.  Many power gen facilities use Maximo or SAP.

Most I’ve seen is Maximo and SAP. Depends on needs and the aforementioned are not easy to learn.

There’s a lot of new options out there I recommend looking at first so you’re aware of options that don’t have a 10+ year old interface. It’s like reading a book in English instead of reading a book in a language you don’t yet know.

    Hi Walt,

I have assisted many Power Utilities with CMMS/EAM systems over the years and by far the majority of the ones I worked with use and like IBM Maximo. It can be configured to be as simple or robust/enterprise level as an organization needs. Its strength can also be its biggest weakness, it can be "too big" and complicated but that can be alleviated by someone who knows what they're doing setting it up. It has great capabilities for preventive maintenance, condition monitoring, IoT, reliability engineering in addition to being extremely good at basic maintenance.

Feel free to reach out if you have any specific questions would like me to share my experiences.

My experience is if you have SAP Financials, use SAP for your maintenance and MRO storeroom needs.  Why?  I was part of a utility SAP implementation team in 1995.  Back then, SAP 3.0 was fully capable of managing all of our corrective, preventive, capital, etc. work at 4 large power plants with multiple units, mostly coal, oil, and NG.  We had unit specific equipment, common unit equipment, full compliment of Flocs, equip, sub-equip, all task list types, all BOM types, complete set of strategy maintenance plans (5,000 as I recall).  Interestingly we made the flocs one to one with equipment and it really worked out nicely.
I've been involved with many other utilities using SAP for financials and most given the convenience of being in one system, use SAP for maintenance and MRO stores.  And now, fast forward almost 28 years, SAP features and functions are far more advanced compared to 1995.  I left the utility in 1996 and have been implementing SAP EAM ever since.
    Happy to discuss.

I would suggest IBM Maximo.  The functionality and asset management features are excellent and apply well to the space.

Thanks for all the replies. I asked specifically about power gen application because we tend to be asset heavy and PM heavy. Power gen is also a PdM playground with tons of opportunity. Metrics on reliability and production are slightly different as MWs down the line are important, but availability of the generators is the real measuring stick.
We currently use Mainsaver; have been for a very long time. I'm working with our staff to identify what we want out of our CMMS system and then intend to see if what we have can do what we need or is there is something that better fits our needs. The rub is that we are a municipal utility and everything goes out for bid. We have to be very careful because is is sometimes difficult to quantify specifications.
    Again, thanks for your input.

I would agree with others. If the organization has adopted an enterprise level business application (i.e. SAP), it is better to get an integrator to assist procurement, maintenance and IS to gain full functionality of the ERP functionality. We have been success (as an integrator) in this space with both SAP and Maximo. One important factor is having individuals on the team that can translate needs to IS group.

I hope the fact that "everything goes out for bids" won't prevent you from specifying which platform you will implement.  On your RFP you could state, for example, "Maximo implementation, with the following defined functionality and the below listed interconections to ERP, Accounting and other software systems currently in use . . ."  There are lots of vendors who would quote this, and a whole different set of vendors who would quote SAP.

Hi Walt, with the current state of software subscriptions and pre-configured systems buying a CMMS/EAM doesn't have to be a huge RFP process. Many organizations are able to cover the subscriptions under current O&M budgets. I'd be happy to share my experiences with working with folks in your current situation, feel free to drop me a line if you'd like to chat. I routinely help guide power generation, transmission, and distribution (as well and other water, wastewater, gas, etc.) municipal utilities in the right direction and although I am a consultant I don't charge for this kind of advice.

    Hi Walt,
sorry for the late reply ,
i am using Mainsaver too in my organization, i had faced the same issue with Mainsaver and i had to have some working sessions with the CMMS provider to be able to set reliability data for Power generation equipment (Turbine, compressor, generators,...). The CMMS provides futures for that but there are some specific settings:

*I guess your PM frequency code is based on running Hours.. if that is the case, you will be entering "asset downtime" values and change the "asset status" (ISF -In Service Full, ISL- In Service Limited, OOS- Out Of Service, ..); that way the system can easy compute availability/reliability data...
*Also, you need to well define your "fault Cod" table so that you can easily sort out repeated failure per asset, rework, .. and get accurate data analysis.

if you are interested to know more about those features and settings options, i suggest you should contact:
