  • 1.  Craft Training for Mechanical and I&E Maintenance Technicians

I was interested in knowing if anyone has any experience using CBT (Computer based training and videos) training to increase knowledge and/or skill of their Maintenance Technicians; and if so, how applicable did you find it to be?

We use CBT for procedural type training. It can be helpful to make sure everyone achieves the base information needed. The effectiveness may largely depend on your workforce. At my current company people are more comfortable with this style of learning. At other places in my past it seemed less effective. I am working on creating reliability type lessons such as evidence collection and preservation for RCA to use CBT format. I do believe there is no substitute for face to face engagement to display ownership of a program. If the concept requires mechanics to take an extra step then showing up and allowing for their input through conversation is helpful for successful implementation.

We use CBT for some general knowledge like Safety Instrumented Systems 101, however our I&E craftsmen must get certified by local trainers in their fundamental skills in face-to-face classes.
