Procedures, policies and other internal documents created by employees are usually created by subject matter experts (SMEs). Although experts on the subject, they are often not expert writers. Every document produced internally should follow a standard format and be reviewed and edited by technical writers. Too often SMEs write more than is necessary, hoping to help the reader. Too many words confuse the content and might create conflicting text. SMEs know the subject very well and when they review their own work, it makes perfect sense. A technical writing expert ensures concise, comprehensive and clear documents. Unclear is unsafe.
