One of the greatest challenges of emergency work is stopping the work when the emergency is controlled. Emergency work is work to correct an ongoing or impending hazard to personnel, environment, or equipment. Technicians want to return the process to normal operations and will continue working past controlling the emergency. This is unplanned work therefore 80% more dangerous. The emergency caused a break in the schedule. Continuing past the emergency further impacts the scheduled work orders.

Management must include in the policies and procedures prohibitions to continue past the emergency.

    1. Control the emergency.

    2. STOP work.

    3. Enter a work request into the CMMS to return normal operations.

    4. Maybe it is deemed priority over scheduled work but in many cases it will be delayed.

    5. Plan the return to service work. Planning and Scheduling is not involved because they are preparing future work. Rely on work orders for the same or similar recovery efforts from the past.
