What is my path?
This will be one of the first questions a new employee wants answered, and possibly before they accept a position.
World class companies encourage employees toward promotion.
A new employee wants to know their responsibilities and the path forward. Ensure each position in the company has a job description. Most large companies have them, but they are often not updated, do not match today and there have probably been positions added which are not defined. A former employer had job descriptions for almost every position but so many were copy pasted and edited a little from other position that although the title was different, the content was very similar. My team, Continuous Improvement & Knowledge Management, fixed them, dozens of positions. Check yours and update annually.
When you have identified all the positions, ensure each position has relevant training assigned. Using a learning management system (LMS), maintain a record of training which qualifies them for the position they hold. Giving a person a title does not qualify them.
With this complete, every employee knows their responsibilities and what they need to achieve a different position. Keep your best employees by offering continuous improvement of position and improve your company from within.
