SMRP UK Chapter

Ok, so a discussion for all but particularly aimed at UK SMRP Members.

I've been a member of SMRP since the early 2000s when I first achieved CMRP Certification back in my New Zealand days. I've been resident in the UK since 2006. Since that time I've always wondered why there isn't a UK Maintenance Society or similar. We have the Institute of Asset Management (of which I am also a member). IAM, in my opinion, is not really targeted at Maintenance Practitioners.

There is no SMRP UK Chapter or similar. The European Federation of National Maintenance Societies did have the Society of Diagnostic Engineers listed as the UK chapter of that organisation a few years back. I did have some engagement with SDE but again, in my opinion, they were not really aligned with what, in my view, would be a beneficial network for Maintenance Practitioners. Looking at the EFNMS website today, I see there is no longer a UK Member group (BREXIT strikes??).
I did approach SMRP about starting a UK Chapter, again a few years back, but at that time I was informed they were not looking to open any more international chapters.

So my question for the 71 UK SMRP Members in the Directory and anyone else interested is:
Would there be value in working to establish (formally or informally) a UK SMRP Chapter/Group/Network?

Depending on the response, I'd be happy to start the process rolling but would be looking for other members to help once established. Not sure what the outcome looks like but depending on member requirements and any SMRP input so will shape up as we go.

Oh, and for those who don't know SMRP & the IAM have a MOU for sharing member benefits. This means if you join one you get access to the other! See here; The Institute of Asset Management (IAM)'s News Feed

    Looking forward to responses.

    Hey Paul,

good to see you on here, it has been a few years....

I don't know why there is not chapter I would guess it is plain competition and the MOU may stop something like that in the background (again, just guessing).

I'd be interested to help you with some contacts etc.  Since I am in the US, I'm not sure I can be part of it, but I can certainly help.  If it is an EFNMS or SMRP or both, it would be a fun task.

    Hi Paul,

As a member of the SMRP Membership committee, I can't let this lose momentum! Please contact Maryam Ismael (mismael@smrp.org) about establishing your chapter, as she is in membership services.

I see the IAM was mentioned, your SMRP membership effectively includes a companion membership to IAM, which I thoroughly enjoy, plus it saves your company funding two separate (but related) professional agencies.

    Thanks for your support.

    Hi John
Thanks for the SMRP support offer. Interesting response I've already received from SMRP re no more international chapters. Same response I received some years ago when I first approached them about this.... Saying that, Maryam has offered to set up a UK community in the SMRP Exchange. Something I'll follow up on with her and the UK members in this thread..

    All the best

Interesting Paul - I'm curious why. It's good to build a rapport with her as SMRP is trying to recover some lost membership due to COVID, and she has been very proactive in exploring all channels to achieve this. I'll discuss with her and get back to you.

Paul, I spoke with Maryam and there are significant business deterrents to setting up international chapters, and SMRP has instead towards working with affiliates, one of which is currently underway in Latin America. She can provide more details but now I can see why. Best wishes with your UK community!

    Hello Paul,

Thanks for your post - it would be great to have a UK chapter of SMRP.  I'd be glad to have a discussion on how Isograph can help to support this.

Hello Paul, I hope all is well.
I recently renewed my SMRP after it had lapsed. I did enquire a number of years ago after returning to the UK from Australia about setting up SMRP UK Chapter and was told by SMRP that it was due to tax reasons that they could not set up a chapter here. Maybe things have changed and like Rachel at Isograph, I would be happy to help out and support if required.

    Hi John,
nice to hear from you. I see no problem with you being part of the community at this stage. I am only the instigator though, of this  conversation, so lets see how it develops.

Hi David, thanks for offering to participate.

So I count 7 people so far (including me).
Lets see what next week brings. We have been offered our own SMRP Exchange Community for UK members which I'll follow up on.
There are other online communities I am being made aware of such as Mobius. These are attached to commercial entities and to be honest I'm trying keep this a (non-commercial) members group to start.  Saying that, I am only one of the seven!

    Have a good weekend.
