I work for an electric cooperative. We use an ultrasonic "gun" to (UE Systems Ultrasound 15000 but the older version) to search for air and gas leaks. SDT also has a version. Another very effective tool is a ultrasonic camera. It visually pinpoints where a leak is located. However, these are not useful in confined spaces or in areas where sound can bounce off of equipment/piping in the way. One of our PdM technicians tried to use it to find leaks in tube bundles in the boiler but he could not pinpoint sources due to the sound bouncing around so much.
