I have been working on defining asset criticality for several clients. As for me, I prefer to use Norsok Z-008 as basis for consequence classification. As for the FMECA/FMEA part, I will refer to Oreda book for the inputs. You can also use IEC 60812 or ISO 60300 series for your references of criticality assessment.

To carry out Asset criticality assessment you will need to have a "Bow-tie" session with subject matter experts and stakeholders, where the criticality of individual equipment will be accessed and assigned "level of criticality", if the facility has a current HSE CASE STUDY  documentation, it can also be helpful in knowing the safety criticality of asset equipment.

    Hi,

I agree with Maurina, You may use the Nosisok Z-008 or the /IEC 60812 as guidance for asset criticality.

I have done several asset criticalities with multiple industries and one key thing is understanding their operational and business goals.

All methodologies usually produce the same ranking as long as the goal aligns with business needs.

Also, the formula of risk index, Severity X probability occurrence, is pretty standard to determine risk.

    Greetings!

I have been doing asset criticality analysis for some time. We have been using a seven factor method that included a rating on safety performance, redundancy, loading factor, time to repair factor, cost of replacement factor and severity factor. The output would be a list of equipment's that were classified as most critical, critical and non critical. For most critical equipment, condition appraisal was planned in addition to existing PM programs.

    Regards,

    Srihari

Thanks, Srihari,  I belive the above factors are important for understanding the criticality, but in advance and improvement stage.

    Hey Aymne,

Asset criticality is a great tool that will help drive your maintenance and reliability program. The beauty of an asset criticality tool is that it is specific to your site. I would start by keeping it simple. For me, I would use what is important to your site to drive the criticality tool. I would involve operations, maintenance, and engineering in creating this tool. This will allow you to share with them the value of the tool and they will be more likely to use it because they played a part in creating it. I would get everyone in a room and then start by looking at what your company values and then what each department values. The first one we created, included safety, maintenance (MTBF, MTTR, Maintainability), quality, operational impact, and environmental. After this, I directed the team in weighting these values. This will help you have a more defined tool that will not favor one department or the other. This tool will be a reflection of the company as a whole. After this, you can compile your asset list from your asset hierarchy and run it through the tool.

    To Recap:

    • Generate a Criticality Team: (Operations, Engineering, Safety, Maintenance)
    • Determine the criteria and weighting.
    • Compile Asset list
    • Generate Criticality Evaluation Team (Subject Matter Experts)
    • Start running assets through the tool.

If I can be of any assistance, feel free to shoot me an email!

thanks, Robert, Very useful explanation. I am similarly carrying out the above with 70% let's say, but you give me a space for improvement

    Hi Aymen,

I will be running a webinar on this topic on Wednesday 03 April, if you would like to attend.  The content will explain a tried-and-tested method that has been used across industry, and which is well aligned to many of the methods already mentioned by the other respondents.  You will learn about the reasons for doing a Criticality Assessment, how to configure it to suit your own operating context, how to run the session and record the results, and how to apply the ranking to your equipment.

Let me know if you are interested and I can send you the details by email.
