  • 1.  CMRP Exam

    Posted yesterday

    Hello All,

I hope everyone is doing well.

I am currently planning to take the CMRP (Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional).

I have been doing some research to understand how much weight the CMRP exam places on calculation-based questions. Do we need to memorize all the formulas, or is it more important to understand the concepts behind them?

Also, could you please recommend any reliable reference materials or study resources-other than the SMRP (Society for Maintenance and Reliability Professionals) Body of Knowledge and Maintenance & Reliability Best Practices by Ramesh Gulati-that you found helpful while preparing for the exam?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Great questions - both come up a lot from candidates preparing for the first time.

On calculations: the CMRP exam is not heavily calculation-focused. You will encounter some quantitative questions, particularly around reliability metrics like MTBF; MTTR; availability; and basic probability, but the exam tests your ability to apply concepts in context more than your ability to compute formulas from memory. Understanding what a metric means and when to use it matters far more than memorizing the formula itself.

That said; being comfortable with the core reliability formulas (R(t) = e^(-λt); availability = MTBF / (MTBF + MTTR)) will give you confidence when those questions appear.

On study resources beyond the BoK and Gulati:

Reliability Engineering and Risk Analysis by Modarres; Kaminskiy; and Krivtsov - practical and well-aligned with the Equipment Reliability domain.

SMRP Best Practices documents: often overlooked but directly aligned with exam language

Practice exams: in my experience this is where candidates gain the most ground in the final weeks; pattern recognition with exam-style questions accelerates readiness significantly.

Happy to answer any other questions as you move through your preparation. I also work with professionals one-on-one through structured CMRP preparation programs if you ever want a more guided approach, feel free to reach out.
