Welcome Forrest!
There are good textbooks, articles and courses to help you on your journey.
You may wish to have a look at: Maintenance Planning and Scheduling Handbook by Doc Palmer
Some things to consider for a new Planner position, which creating the role, rather than taking over an established position, will be part of the job:
- Is there a job description with short and long term targets, as the job will likely evolve?
- Have the maintenance procedures been updated to include the Planner's role? If procedures do not exist then they will need to be drawn so that everyone involved will know what they have to do.
- In relation to (2), is there a Worker Order system in place? This will lead to a CMMS implementation to help with managing the information and controlling the work efficiently.
- Is there an up-to-date asset register and meaningful PMs? These are prerequisites for the WO system and CMMS to function effectively.
- Is there a role/department that manages the procurement and the stores?
- Is the Planner's role disengaged from breakdown work? When something fails is too late to plan anything and the Planner will be more gainfully engaged by planning to prevent the next failure.
- Is the Planner responsible for scheduling or is there a different role for that?

Subject: Greetings!
Good Morning/Evening Friends!!
My name is Forrest; I have been an industrial mechanic in the food and bev manufacturing for a bit now. However, we just got ourselves a new Director of Maintenance at my corporation.. He has created the Maintenance Planner Position; and i have the honor of being the first for our corporation.
Maintenance Planning i have always found fascinating and i guess i've been indirectly doing since i've been working here.. Just did not know it was an actual profession. Since he opened my eyes to the job; i have been doing tons of research and things to make myself better at it.
So, here i am reaching out to all of you! If there is anything you guys have forms, excel sheet, power point templates, etc. I would love to receive them. Like I said i am the first; so i don't have anything built up yet to start this process. I know my new Director brought things with him from his old job... However, if i can take a bunch of things from all of you that you deemed helpful.. then i can put together something that will work for me and my company. Which will give the Director some time to focus on some other important aspects.
Again, i am so excited to being going down this journey and i look forward getting certified as well attending many of the SMRP events and functions..
Thanks!
Forrest
