    But true reliability starts much earlier.

    It begins with understanding how engineering decisions made during design, procurement, installation, and operation influence an asset's entire lifecycle.

    A reliable asset is not simply one that fails less frequently-it is one that consistently delivers value while balancing performance, safety, risk, and cost.

    As reliability professionals, our challenge is to move beyond reactive thinking and become strategic decision-makers who connect maintenance, asset integrity, risk management, and business objectives.

    Technology continues to evolve, but one principle remains unchanged:

    "The best maintenance strategy is the one that prevents uncertainty-not just failures."

    Well said Christian. Reliability is often viewed through the lens of maintenance, but its greatest impact is realized when it influences decisions across the entire asset lifecycle. Every design choice, procurement specification, commissioning activity, and operational practice either adds to or erodes future reliability.

    The most successful organizations embed reliability into capital planning, risk management, asset integrity, and operational strategy. When reliability becomes a business discipline rather than a maintenance function, it improves safety, reduces lifecycle costs, strengthens resilience, and maximizes return on assets.

    True reliability in our chemical plant is about protecting our process safety and production margins, not just repairing broken equipment. We integrate reliability into strategic decision-making by embedding maintenance insights into the early design phase of new projects to enforce standardization and eliminate future maintenance nightmares before they are built. It requires partnering closely with operations, ensuring assets are never overstressed for short-term gains. Ultimately, we must use a risk-based asset criticality matrix to drive our budget, moving our focus away from daily firefighting and toward aggressively preventing the specific failures that threaten our plant's safety and business objectives.
