  • 1.  Transformer and Switchgear Predictive monitoring

    Posted 20 days ago

    Good day,

Has anyone implemented system monitoring/ predictive technologies on transformers and switchgears? Transformers are 13.8kv to 34kv, and switchgears are 34kv rated. Looking to see what's available with SEL on the switchgears but looking for feedback on anything that has been installed and of value on transformers for installed vibration/ DGA sensors.

Brett, I work for a data center company. We have over 500 MV transformers - most 34.5 KV. We have conducted annual DGA sampling which has revealed some problems and abnormal results. About 3 years ago I started including annual IR, ultrasonic and partial discharge testing when obtaining the sample. We had to add IR windows to most of them. Annually has worked. They aren't critical enough to justify continuous monitoring. I have continuous monitoring on 3 HV transformers 69 KV for vibration. Looking to extend to all of our HV transformers. There are provisions in NFPA 70B for predictive monitoring.

    Greetings Brett,

I have helped many facilities implement predictive asset monitoring solutions for transformers, rotating equipment and switchgear.  I would be happy to discuss some options including DGA monitoring and Partial Discharge monitoring for those assets. We have also helped set up monitoring solutions for MV cables for large FAB's and utilities. If you would like to have a discussion about what we have seen others do for these assets, I would be happy to arrange a call.

    Best regards,

Hi Brett, I have work in reliability for many years and with transformers but on the oil side of things for testing of the dissolved gas and contamination properties.  I have access to many companies offering sensors, and offer other predictive tools outside of testing   Could we set up a call to discuss this further, my cell is 707-812-3602, linda.perry@theviswagroup.com, I think I can assist and align you with some help.
