The definition of critical equipment may vary from organization to organization. In fact, if it is not formalized there may be several interpretations of equipment criticality within a single organization. The assumptions used to assess what equipment is critical are not technically based.
As a result, when different individuals are asked to identify their critical equipment, they will likely select different pieces of equipment. Often, we are told, “all our equipment is critical!”
Selections are based on individual opinions, lacking consensus. The potential for equipment failure having significant safety, environmental or economic
consequences may be overlooked.
