Working remotely for an industrial facility has always been a topic of hot debate however still I will share my personal experience in this part of the world. Off-late, thanks to pandemic, people did warm to the idea of remote collaboration for service advisory and analysis based services. Sincerity of the service provider and sustained interest level of the recipient team are critical success factors. Participation of Senior leadership on sessions regularly or surprise attendance ensured that active engagement from all sides is maintained.
What worked for us which we learnt the hard way was to keep all the work ready in a format which is ready for review rather than 'doing' from ground up. Example - It was worthwhile to prepare the FMEA in advance based on our understanding then the cross-functional team from plant side review or amendment made things easier for all concerned. However we did supplement our work with on-site visits in 'burst' mode (1week On-site & 3 weeks off-site) which helped to put face to emails/Teams pic :-)

Vinay
PS: If off-shoring does not work, near-shoring or friend shoring will work for sure
