What's your experience with vibration analysis training?

  • 1.  What's your experience with vibration analysis training?

    Hello,

    I am currently looking to grow my knowledge of Vibration analysis.  I am researching training programs, and I would like to hear from people who have gotten training or work as vibration analysts.

    I web search has turned up a couple of organizations, the Vibration Institute and the Mobius Institute.  They seem to offer similar courses, both on-line and in person.  Do you have a preference for one?  Why do you favor them?

    Do you know of any vibration courses offered by a continuing education arm of a university?

    I took Cat II vibration analysis from Mobius Institute and was pleased. Vibe Institute is also a good organization, I'm just not familiar with their online courses.

    Zenco is another option for you, I took the CAT I certification and the explanation and all the concepts showed was really good.  Has two modalities online and on site .

    I used Zenco for Cat I as well (live online option), and was very pleased with the delivery and class materials. I had a difficult time finding a public in-person class that was local to me.

    Technical Associates of Charlotte is another training provider I have seen, but I don't have experience with them and I think they are in-person only.

    If you are just looking to gain some basic knowledge before deciding if you want to do certification training, Mobius and other training/sensor/analysis vendors put good content on YouTube also.

    I have been around for a long time starting my journey in 1995. I have gotten training through Emerson/CSI, Enteck IRD, Vibration Institute, Modius and Technical Associates/TA.

    Over my career I have had Level 1 Certification through Emerson CSI, Enteck IRD and Vibration Institute. Level 2 through Enteck and my current Level 3 vibration certifications through Technical Associates and Mobius. 

    The 2 oldest training organizations in my list are the Vibration Institute and TA.  

    If you look at several vibration platforms they use TA and their process for building alarms and machine set up. The one thing I have always liked about TA is they used to require all their instructors to spend 25% of their time in the field doing vibration work which is different than some organizations. If you talk with some instructors they don't spend a lot of time in the field. Also with TA their instructors were always versed in the use of almost every vibration platform out there. 

    The Vibration institute seems to be more geared to the engineering side of things but if you look at most of what they are doing it's being done by Engineers and PHD level people. 

    Now there are also a lot of individuals out there that provide high quality training where back when I started there were just a few. Some of these have set up partnerships with local service providers so there may also be some quality opportunities though some of your current company vendors. There is nothing wrong with these folks but just make sure you research the instructor that is providing this training.  

    For me my first choice is TA for vibration training because they also provided more case studies then other places did. A lot of people are using computer generated spectrums and waveforms as part of the training which is OK but many times they are cleaner then the data you will see in the real world.

    Our organization has recommended Technical Associates to all of our engineers and technicians seeking training / certification for the past couple years. I've personally taken Category I and II courses in -person and was very pleased with the instruction and resources provided. In some cases, we've standardized the way we measure like-equipment across the organization using their 'Proven Method'. It's been an advantage to standardize the training provider throughout the organization because then everyone is familiar with the same references, charts, etc. Makes it really easy to work together.

    If you are looking for a collage level course reach out to University of Tennessee they were the first to develop an actual Engineering program based on Reliability Engineering. They maybe doing some type of vibration program training as part of that Engineering Degree program.

    Hello Joe,

    I did work with Mobius to implement a Condition Monitoring certification program, including Vibration Analysis, with Mobius in West Africa. They offer a pretty comprehensive curricula with a network of certified instructors worldwide. You want to work with an accredited institution if you want to get certified.

    Joe,

     

    I received my Level I and Level II vibration analyst certifications from Vibration Institute. The PdM Specialists here went to Technical Associates in Charlotte, NC. I don't remember pricing but I think Technical Associates was a bit cheaper. I really enjoyed VI. The engineer in me got into the theory behind observed vibration signals. I will admit that IMHO some of the illustrations SEEMED dated and looked like copies of copies of copies so a bit challenging to see. Also, they tended to be laboratory examples and not real world, i.e. right on the nose and not ambiguous or more than one fault like you would see in the field. BUT, you do have to crawl before you can run.

     

    There is a lot of information you have to learn to get the certification, but they do give you study index cards and the workbook(s)/lesson materials are good reference material....IMHO. The vast majority of the material centers around ball bearings but they cover other types of bearings, gears, and touch on balancing (this may be Level II; it has been a minute since I got my Level I cert). If I'm not mistaken, the thing the PdM Specialists liked about TA was that their course was more practical and less theory based.
