Hi there. I'm Jane Siggelko, SMRP's Associate Director. Thanks for participating on SMRP Exchange! You'll be seeing my name a lot now, so I thought I'd take a minute to formally introduce myself.

I've been working with SMRP for about four years. In my current role, I'm responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of SMRP's member services, programs and marketing. I also oversee SMRP's foundation activities, such as the Body of Knowledge committees and scholarship program.

I am so excited to offer this new benefit to SMRP members to enable you to learn, connect and share with your peers in maintenance, reliability and physical asset management.

Welcome to the Exchange! I hope you'll take a minute to introduce yourself to the community.

    Best,

    Jane

Hello!  My name is Jon Yelverton.  I am currently a maintenance technician at a corn mill.  I work on production equipment including packaging machines and robots.  I also do facility maintenance including electrical and HVAC work.  I like my job because I think technology is interesting.  I'm still trying to understand what electricity actually is, you know?  Magnets too.  Also, as a maintenance man, I get to work autonomously, but also be a helper to everyone.

I'm always seeking more knowledge and a professional vision.  I hope I find that with SMRP's help.

Hi Richard, it's great to hear that you're studying Spanish as one of your retirement projects! Learning a new language is a wonderful challenge and opportunity to broaden your horizons. I'm glad to hear that message provided by Ivan with some new vocabulary related to maintenance and reliability is useful and not typically found in Spanish textbooks. I also would like to learn technical vocabulary and If you ever need any help learning technical English in this field, I'd be happy to assist you in any way I can. As someone from Central America, I understand how challenging it can be to learn technical language in a different environment than we're accustomed to. My name is Robbie Seward.  I am a PdM/CBM Engineering Technologist at Nissan in Canton, MS.  I was given the opportunity to travel the PdM / Equipment Reliability path over 6 years ago.  I took to it like a fish to water.  Since then, I have earned quite a number of certifications (including CMRP and CMRT), as well as being given the opportunity to being one of the first to start leading our plant in the same direction.  I really prefer the technical aspect of reliability (PdM / CBM).  I am really a hands-on type of person.  I hope I can find the time to get involved in several of the conversations that I have seen.  I am liking what I see in this forum and I think this is a good move by the SMRP to get this started.

    Hi all,

I'm Todd Heindselman. I am a maintenance and reliability engineer for Liebherr Mining Equipment. I've been in this role for 2 years, with prior experience in remanufacturing of major haul truck components.

Prior to that, I've been an engineer in ship construction, fiber optics, and data pattern and predictive analysis. After high school I was a Machinist's Mate in the US Navy. This means that over the course of my career, I have been the guy wondering who put that valve way down there, and the guy who had to put that valve there.

I joined SMRP last year and have become very interested in the reliability of our machines. The biggest challenge that I face is that I design the maintenance plan for the customers. I have no control over the adherence to plan, abuse of equipment, or data being returned to evaluate effectiveness. This also makes determining component reliability very difficult, but if this job was easy, they'd let anyone be a M&R professional.

I look forward to learning a lot more about M&R and having some fruitful discussions on this forum.

    Hello All;
Reliability and Maintenance have been a part of my life since I started working in our family farm's maintenance shop in 1960.  I graduated with a BS ME from Virginia Tech in 1977 having worked my way through school as a machinist and owner of a repair service.  I earned my PE in 1983. Along the way I picked up an airframe and power plant technician's license. Since my family and friends fly with me in what I maintain, Reliability is very close up and personal to me. I was first professionally involved in Reliability and Maintenance in 1985, became  member of SMRP around 1996 and received my CMRP around 2000. I have been at various times in Plant design and construction,  Process control, Operations, Maintenance, Reliability Engineering, and  R&M Consulting.  Having recently "retired", I now do Reliability consulting on a part time basis. Despite the variety of roles, my origins and most of my career has been firmly rooted in Reliability and Maintenance.  To all prospective Reliability practitioners: Time spent in those other roles,  the roles that you will ultimately be supporting as an R&M professional, is time very well spent. having walked in their shoes for a mile, you will relate better to them.

To those of you who are early in your career: A firm that recently approached me to do some work for them asked me to list the industries and locations where my career has taken me.  It took at while, but the tally came up to 30 industries at 53 sites in 11 countries.  All of this goes to prove only that a career in Reliability really has no geographic boundaries, nor is it constrained to only certain industries. I have had the good fortune and luck to be able to experience  a wide cross section.  This presents  endless opportunity to experience and learn. It has been an exciting era in this field, and feel privileged to have seen SMRP grow and develop into what it is today. I hope to see all of my old friends again and meet new ones this coming year at the 2018 SMRP Conference.

An observation:  Our technology is excellent and getting better exponentially, however our technology has never been the limiting  factor in reliability. Since the days of the first wheel, when one oxcart driver put his hand on the wheel hub and thought "Hmmh, it's kind of hot. Time to put some more mutton fat on the axle." we have had predictive and preventive technology satiable to the technology being maintained. When the other drivers said "We don't have time for that. We need to move 5 loads each today." and the overseer said "Don't you know that mutton fat is too expensive to waste on axles?" the real limitation was firmly established.   The true limit has always been the human factor - psychology, not just technology.  And until such time that Reliability and associated proactive mindset are as ingrained and integral part of business as accounting and operations, our profession will always be playing a catch up game.  I would like to challenge every member of SMRP to seek out any opportunity to educate the rest of the organization as to the true value proposition of effective and efficient Maintenance and Reliability functions.    Bring a financial person or an OPS manager with you to SMRP some time.  Feed them success stories. Show them the money, or whatever else motivates them. They don't necessarily need to learn how it is done, but they most certainly need to know why it is important to them that it must be done.

I look forward to learning more from these open forum discussions.

    Hello everyone!
I have over 30 years in maintenance and reliability within the pharmaceutical industry. 26 years with GlaxoSmithKline, finished there as Head of Maintenance and Reliability.
At that point I started my own company, Reliable Asset Management Services. I then spent approximately 2 1/2 years on assignment for GenesisSolutions as a Senior Reliability Consultant with Apotex Inc.  When the project finished I did  2 1/2 years at Apotex full time as Associate Director of Engineering at their Signet site.
I am now going on assignment again as a Senior Reliability Consultant to Sanofi, another pharmaceutical site here in Toronto.

I was recently voted Chair of the Ontario Chapter of the SMRP and  I look forward to giving back to the organization.

As the final contribution to my profession, I anm striving to get started the new age of achievable operational excellence. The new age entails tapping into a firm's grassroot culture of systems, software and skills to become "data-driven-capable" and then weave into its data-driven functioning the insight deliverables of advanced analytics to ask and answer five essential performance questions (relationship, difference, time series, duration and apparency) we could not before.

Accordingly, I guide organizations, through seed operatives, managers and subject matter experts, to act upon discovering that they already have all that is necessary in their operating systems, software and skills to quickly and cost free become data-driven-capable and, in turn, weave the five questions into its data-driven operation.

This quest shares the outcome of my own new-age strategy to learn and weave data science into the acumen of almost 40 years as an adviser in business strategy, finance and operations; including 30 years with maintenance and reliability and preceded by 6 years as a manager of complex civil engineering projects.

My commitment to maintenance and reliability excellence is demonstrated by having written the two books, "Availability Engineering and Management for Manufacturing Plant Performance" and "Maintenance Reinvented for Business Performance."

    Hello,

I've been reading the forum posts since its inception and finally decided to make a brief introduction. I'm a Reliability Engineer at a pharmaceutical manufacturing site in upstate NY, and I recently received my CMRP certification. Compared to most folks here, I'd say I'm came to this role through a very non-traditional route (my degrees are biology & education-related). I'm approaching 10 of experience with my current employer, and approximately 13 years of total experience in pharmaceutical and excipient manufacturing industries.  In addition to equipment reliability and maintenance optimization, my interests include maintenance planning, KPIs, CMMS data usage, RCA, Lean/Kaizen, ensuring that the Maintenance department is supportive of Safety and Quality objectives in an industry that's heavily influenced by regulations.

So far, I've found SMRP resources to be very helpful and I look forward to learning more from fellow members and through training/learning opportunities.

    Hi everyone....!!!

I'm Yorman, first at all I'm come from Venezuela, but from 3 years ago I'm living in the beautiful city of Orlando in Florida. I come from the Oil&Gas Industry of my country, specifically from Petroleums of Venezuela S.A. (CITGO Petroleum's Owner), I was working there for 12 years and 2 years more in contractors, I expend 3 years in my internships working with ER&M Consulting (Reliability and Maintenance Consulting Company in Venezuela with some business in Argentina, Mexico, Colombia and Chile), so basically I have been working from my beginning in the Reliability and Maintenance field. I reached a Bachelor Science Degree in Mechanical Maintenance Engineering and a Master Science Degree in Petroleum Engineering (Specialist in fluid transport). Just right now I am not working in the reliability and maintenance field but I keep my eyes open to find something here in USA. For now I conform with share info about study cases and keep learning about this awesome field of maintenance and reliability that I really love.  I'm lover of the Maintenance and Reliability field, I think that is one on the most complete careers because it is really wide and you have tu study a little bit of everything, projects managements, electricity, instruments and controls, chemic, mechanics of the fluids, mechanics, thermodynamics, statistics, etc (and even in some cases politics, for the eternal war between operations and maintenance departments jajajajajajajaja), with this I just want to express the love that I feel for my career.

    Cover Letter from my Resume.

As an mechanical maintenance engineer, my main objective is focus on design solutions that allow the planning and optimization of resources associated with the execution of the maintenance of productive equipments, considering at the same time, procedures and budgets and statistical tools of reliability and engineering that allow me achieve a better maintainability, availability and reliability of the components of a productive system. I worked for 14 years as a Mechanical Maintenance, Reliability and Projects engineer in the national Oil & Gas industry in Venezuela, in Petroleum of Venezuela, S.A. I am a dynamic and proactive professional with experience designing and supervising maintenance plans for axial pumps (centrifugal, reciprocating), gas turbine, reciprocating engines, compressors (reciprocating and axial), pipe lines, tanks, separators, valves, heaters, boilers, hydrocyclone, heat exchanger, applying some standards (ISO 14224, ASME B31.3, API RP 580, PAS 55-1, ASME PTC 8.2, API 674, AICHE G56, API 1160, API 610, API 650, API 653, API 689, IEC 31030), and some Reliability Analysis (Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM), Analysis of life Cycle Cost, Reliability Ability and Maintainability Analysis (RAM), Simulation of the Effective Capacity, Criticality Analysis, Piping Inspection and Risk Calculation, Risk-Based Inspection for tanks and pipelines, Tank Inspection and Risk Calculation with the Points Matrix methodology, Maintenance Backlog Calculation, Productive Systems Analysis, Human Reliability). Also, I have knowledge of Tribology (friction, wear and lubrication), vibration analysis, mechanical failure analysis, heat transfer, Electric Motor, Basic Electricity AC/DC, Corrosion, Mechanisms Analysis. I feel capable to learn by myself rapid and I adapt in function of the necessities of the job. I am a team player and really enjoy working with other peoples and learn from them.

Hi there! I am Shaival Shah, a recent graduate from Northeastern University, Boston completing my Masters in Mechanical Engineering. I also have my bachelors degree in Mechanical engineering from India and then worked there for a year before moving to the US for my masters. I have 2+ years of industrial experience working in Manufacturing, Maintenance, Reliability and Energy engineering. During my masters, I did a co-op last fall as a Reliability and Energy engineer at a biopharmaceutical company named AbbVie where I was originally exposed to the field of Reliability and since then I plan to explore this field and learn more by pursuing my career in this field. During my final year of bachelors, I did an Industrial project of Implementing Total preventive maintenance in the Irrigation industry where I used the concepts of preventive maintenance as that's where my interests lied. So, with my current academic and industrial background alongside my strength and interests, I plan to move forward in the field of maintenance and reliability.

I joined SMRP with the motive of improving my knowledge in the field by interacting with the fellow members and using their resources. I also aim to get the CMRP certification and hence would like to know more about the resources and guidance from the fellow members. I really appreciate all your valuable guidance and inputs you give for the aspiring reliability engineers like me who look forward to such community for the practical knowledge. I also want to thank the SMRP team for making such a wonderful platform for us all.

I look forward to some valuable connection and knowledge here and am also open to discussing more of my profile and experience. I would also appreciate if you could help me connect with the potential employers who are looking for a reliability or maintenance engineer of my experience and skills. I can be reached out at shah.shaiva@husky.neu.edu or on my phone at +1 774-275-7958. Looking forward to some healthy discussions.

Thank you for your time! Have a great day!

There is a bunch of study material.  I would read Doc Palmers Planning and Scheduling book as well as RCM II by Moubray.  Also, a bunch of study guides out there.  If you have been in reliability for awhile, most of it is common sense you have learned.  If not, I would get some time under your belt to really understand the concepts.  The real key is to be able to use and implement the methods in your organization, not necessarily just pass a test.

Good Morning everyone. I am new to the group here and looking forward to learning and networking with " y'all " !

    A little about me:

I am a Mechanical Engineering graduate from the Rochester Institute of Technology with a passion for Continuous Improvement. Throughout school I enhanced my learning as as a part-time Materials Engineer and then Test Engineer at Delphi Corporation. After graduation I joined the incredible Logan Aluminum team in southern Kentucky where I grew up as a Mechanical Engineer embedded in a Maintenance Organization for 3 years. For the next 7 years I had the pleasure of working for Bridgestone in Nashville TN, first as a Reliability Engineer and ultimately progressing into the Maintenance Standardization Leader role for the company where I was charged with deploying maintenance methodologies and related system tools to support their goals across North and South America.

In 2019 when the time came to chase a dream of working for myself I opened WAF Engineering where we consult in Mechanical Design, Maintenance Management and GuideTi CMMS Implementation services.

In my free time you'll find me messing with my cars or motorcycles, working on wood working projects in the garage, trying to play guitar, spending time with friends and family or out listening to live music !

    Hi Jane and Everyone,

I'm Kiet, working as an Electrical and Instrument Team Leader for an Oil & Gas Company located in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I have involved in maintenance for more than 15 years and just known the Reliability System 2 years ago after attending the PM/PdM training. Recently our company would like to apply 4.0 and PdM to reduce Shutdown due to equipment failure and to reduce maintenance man hour, maintenance cost, material cost.
I have been reading the book: Best Practices for Maintenance and Reliability and I found the list of Maintenance KPI that is recommended by SMRP. Searching in the internet, I found our SMRP website and joined immediately. I have found many interesting and useful things from the Library.
I believe that I shall learn a lot from you all and we can share knowledge, experience with each other.

Thank you all for welcome me to our community.

My name is Don Harvey Jr, Founder of Harvin AR and a new member of SMRP participating in the IA/NE, KC, and Middle Tennesee Chapters. I recently participated in the IA/NE Chapter event listening to some valuable topics presented by some really great speakers, as well as meeting a whole slew of industry experts. Really enjoyed meeting so many individuals that shared a common goal and could not help but want to be more involved and learn.

While I currently manage Harvin AR focusing on Augmented & Virtual Reality (Mixed Reality) in the industrial space, I previously spent a little under 8 years as a Conveyor Belt Specialist calling on all sorts of different manufacturers from Food to Automotive and beyond. It was a valuable experience spending time on plant floors in Maintenance, Sanitation, Production, and more.

Can't wait to participate in more Chapter Events, connect & learn from more individuals, and spread awareness of Augmented & Virtual Reality!

    Hello and greetings from Chicago.

My name is Jamie Soderberg and I have been a maintenance manager for the last 10+ years.  Since the majority of that experience was hospitality, reliability and RCM didn't hold as high of a priority as it does now that I am in a chemical processing plant.  The jump to industrial manufacturing has been exciting and invigorating.

I'm looking forward to learning more about RCM and narrowing my focus in that direction.

Hi Mike …. I will try to minimize my response as there is not a cookie-cutter approach to your journey. But the very first thing is to check your organization for its readiness for change. What you want will require change and that's rarely easy. Second is to not underestimate how difficult this journey is. You will be changing how people work and changing their business view/process of how things have gone in the past to how they will be doing business in the future.

Assuming the organization is up to the task, the first thing is to do an assessment of how you current business operates. This is your reality check of what you are currently doing …. the good, the bad and the ugly. This will serve to help you build your game plan for making changes to get you to the desired future state. And then the hard work begins to execute on the initiatives in your game plan.

I would suggest you engage someone to help guide you through the process.

    Hello,

I am currently a Maintenance Technician called a Craft Technician at Kao USA in Cincinnati, OH. I have been in the manufacturing maintenance field for over 15 years now, I am also going to school to get my AAS in Electrical Technology. I joined SMRP through my school as I thought I would gain beneficial knowledge in CMMS and Continuous Improvement. Recently at Kao I was asked to look in to our CMMS system, revise our PMs and find our weaknesses. I have found this website to be beneficial in helping me to understand what makes a good CMMS and ways to improve and build upon that. I hope to pick your brains more in helping me improve my knowledge and understanding of reliability.

    Hi everyone, I'm Nick.

I'm based in Houston, with a background in oil and gas spanning both the North Sea and the Gulf. Most of my experience has been in the design, development, and deployment of systems used in industrial environments, working closely with operations, planning, commissioning, and reliability teams.

More recently, my focus has been on inspection workflows and improving how field data is captured, structured, and turned into something teams can actually use day to day.

I joined the SMRP forum to learn from others' experiences and to contribute where it makes sense, particularly around practical, real-world challenges in maintenance and reliability.

    Hi everyone,

this is Thomas Röwekamp from Cologne, Germany. I have been in the flat rolled aluminium industry for almost 30 years in technical and managerial roles. I am trained mechanic and studied mechanical and manufacturing engineering in Germany and the UK. I added an Executive MBA some time later.

I worked in technical sales, production, as MD/Plant manager (in Malaysia), in Lean / Operational Excellence and many years as Technical Manager in a huge flat rolled products site near Cologne, being responsible for engineering, maintenance, utilities, technical IT, fire brigade etc.

Nowadays I am leading the World-Class-Maintenance project and roll out across 11 European production sites as a senior manager for strategic projects.

Having not invested too much into my own formal, external training in the past years, I decided to step up and enrolled to become a CMRP.

So far so good, first courses taken and material studied. All resonates well with my experience and I am looking forward to continue, learn and award myself with the certificate :-)

    Best regards

    Thomas

Hi everyone, I am Linda. I've spent over 35 years in reliability, lubrication, and condition monitoring, working closely with maintenance, engineering, procurement, and quality teams to help them make better asset decisions that actually stick.

I currently work with Viswa Group, where I focus on supporting asset-intensive industries through oil, fuel, grease, and fluid testing, reliability programs, and technical consulting - especially where organizations are trying to balance cost, risk, and long-term performance.

What I care most about is helping teams connect the dots between data, reliability, and business outcomes, not just running tests for the sake of it. I'm really looking forward to learning from this group, sharing experiences, and building meaningful connections within the SMRP community.

My name is Matheus Costa, and I am a maintenance and asset management professional based in Brazil, with 16 years of experience in the oil and gas industry. Throughout my career, I have been particularly engaged in strengthening asset governance frameworks, ensuring alignment between maintenance execution, risk management, regulatory compliance, and business strategy.
I currently serve as Offshore Maintenance Superintendent at PRIO, based on the Peregrino B platform. In this role, I lead maintenance governance processes, support asset strategy definition, ensure adherence to corporate and regulatory standards, and promote risk-based decision-making grounded in lifecycle management principles.
Previously, I held the same position at Equinor, supporting operations across the FPSO Peregrino and the Peregrino A, Peregrino B, and Peregrino C platforms. During this period, I was actively involved in structured management systems, change management processes, risk assessments, KPI-driven performance monitoring, and the integration of reliability principles into asset lifecycle decisions.
Earlier in my career, I worked for Halliburton as a Maintenance Engineer in the wireline and perforating segment, and spent nine years as an Offshore Maintenance Supervisor aboard the Etesco Takatsugu J drillship, where strong governance, compliance, and asset integrity were critical to safe and reliable operations.
I am particularly interested in exchanging experiences on asset governance models, risk-based decision-making, lifecycle value optimization, and the development of resilient maintenance organizations in offshore environments.
I look forward to contributing to and learning from the SMRP community.
